Putnam County Courthouse
Client: Putnam County Department of Highways and Facilities
Architect: Preiss Breismeister, PC
Location: Carmel, New York
Attributes: New Construction, General Construction, Detention, Public Facility
Project Description: The design of the new Putnam County Courthouse was intended to represent best practices and state-of-the-art systems and technology at the time of its construction, while still presenting an elegant and refined public building. The hillside site within the Carmel municipal complex affords the building sweeping views with excellent natural light to the inner spaces. Precast concrete panels at the base resemble cut limestone with two story curtain wall and natural bronze entrances. Coordination of construction included fine woodwork in the courtrooms and public areas with medium security detention features in prisoner transport and holding areas such as non-removable ceiling panels, sally port rooms with direct elevator access to courtrooms, private Judge’s entrance and elevator, and multiple security camera and door release and locking devices. This project required a delicate balance of security needs, implementing extensive data and communications wiring, and producing a significant and lasting public facility.
